He was a Cpl. in Co. D. 9th Georgia Battalion Infantry. He enlisted on March 4, 1862. Regiment also shows possibly a brother, Pvt. Francis A. Herndon, also of this company and battalion until transferred to Co. G. 37th Georgia Infantry. He was killed at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 7, 1864
