Lena Bell Anness Eckler Alder

Lena was the daughter of James William and Julia Francis Roland Anness. She had eight siblings.

She married Charlie Eckler on 23 Mar 1920 at the age of 15. He had been widowed twice and had five living children at the time of their marriage. Lena became stepmom to these children although his oldest two sons, who were older than Lena, were already married and lived nearby in their own homes. Lena and Charlie then had six children over the next 16 years. They farmed and lived in Berry, Kentucky.

Lena was widowed at the age of 40 after 24 years of marriage. Life was very difficult already but became even harder as a widow with young children to provide for. Lena was a determined industrious woman who worked hard and stretched all they had to make sure her children had food, clothing and a home.

After three years Lena remarried - to Albert Preston Alder on 03 Oct 1947. They lived in Berry, Ky. She was widowed again after 37 years of marriage at the age of 80. Lena then moved into Senior Citizen Housing in Cynthiana, Ky where she lived until death at the age of 89.

Lena was a Christian and a faithful church member. She loved to read her Bible, sing and write. Lena kept a diary for many years and wrote stories and poems as well as letters to the editor of the local paper. She also loved to fish and was frequently seen around Berry wearing her bonnet and carrying her cane fishing pole.
