Archaeologist, F.S.A., who mainly worked on Roman and later sites in Turkey. Professor of Archaeology at Newcastle University from 1972 to 1985, Professor of Archaeology of the Roman Empire Oxford University and Fellow All Souls College Oxford from 1985 to 1992. He was educated at Sherborne School and Lincoln College, Oxford, and joined the British Institute in Ankara immediately after graduating. Here he started his surveys of Lycia and developed a life-long interest in Anatolia.
