Helene was born in Trieste, Austria but the cith became part of Italy after WWI. She lived with her mother in Constantinople and worked as an English tutor. She spoke at least 5 languages. Married Justus Blumenkranz, a widower with three children, in Constantinople in 1880. She came to New York for a surgery that could not be performed in Egypt, after losing her first pregnancy. Justus followed her there a year later and they settled in Maryland. They moved to Leval, WI where Justus was a minister of a small church. In addition to her three step-children (Anna, Elizabeth and Emil), Helene and Justus had 12 children together: two infants that did not survive, Gerhard, Walter Wilhelm, Agnes Henriette, Lydia M., Theodore William Barton, Emma M., Elsa Thekla, Richard C. and Justice Stephen Barton.
