Mary Ann was born Mary Ann ANTNEY. She was orphaned young and adopted by Orman FAIRCHILD and his wife, Hannah WAGNON (1804-1881). When Mary Ann married Leven T. LANE on April 2, 1840, in Vermilion Co., Illinois, she used the name "Mary Ann FAIRCHILD" in the marriage record. However, her adoption was known, and the death certificates of two of her sons (John and George) list her original surname correctly (although each misspelled it; one as ANTHENLY and one as ANTHONY). Mary Ann and her husband, the Rev. Lane, had six children: John K., James M., Hannah Marie, Joseph R., Elizabeth Ellen, and George H. All but her son James reached maturity; James died as an infant.
