"Deaths of Geo. Trask and Mrs. W.M. Vaughn - Brother and Sister Pass Away Within 24 Hours - Both Early Settlers of Tillamook"
We have to announce the deaths this week of two of the early settlers of Tillamook county - George Trask and Mrs. W.N. Vaughn, brother and sister - which occurred within 24 hours of one another. The death of George Trask took place Wednesday morning at 2 a.m. at the home of Mrs. Martiny and that of Mrs. Vaughn on Wednesday night at 11 p.m. at the home of William Body, left after being there on a there on a three week visit.
George Trask was born at Clatsop Plains, Oregon, on June 12, 1851 and came to Tillamook with his family. He moved to Southern Oregon near Myrtle Creek, where he married and has a wife and four children living whom left about 30 years ago when he returned to Tillamook. He has been in poor health for years but it is only the past three weeks that he became worse. The service will be held at the Grange Hall this afternoon (Thursday) and the interment in the Bay View Cemetery.
Mrs. W.N. Vaughn was also born at Clatsop Plains, Oregon and came to Tillamook County when she was 10 years of age with her parents and lived on a donation claim. At the age of 16 years she was married to W.N. Vaughn and raised 10 children all of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. She resided at Bay View with her husband until his death which occurred on April, 1907 and since then with Amos Vaughn on the home place, that being her home since she was married. The remains will be buried on Saturday at the Bay View Cemetery, the funeral leaving this city at 11 a.m. and the service will be conducted by Rev. D.L. Shrode.
Mr. Vaughn married Harriet Trask who was born on the Clatsop Plains, Clatsop County, December 22, 1843 being the first child born of white parents in that locality. Her father Elbridge Trask, was born in Maine and came to the coast with the American Fur Company about 1840. He subsequently settled in Tillamook County, spending his last years here. He was a man of prominence and the Trask river was named in his honor.
Of the union of Mr. and Mrs Vaughn sixteen children, five sons and ten daughters were born, twelve of whom are living, namely, Mrs. Ida Martiny, Delia Vaughn, dead; Amos Vaughn, Mrs. Lydia Hoskins, Mrs. Alice Woodward, Mrs. Nora Bodyfelt, Tillamook. Mrs. Anna Jacoby, Bay City, Mrs. Clara Carey, La Follett; Warren D. Vaughn and Guy Vaughn, Kelchis, William and Harriett Page, both dead. George V. Vaughn, Bay City, Mrs. Lena Goodspeed, Tillamook and Mrs. Myrtle Holden, Fairview.
