Mrs. Looney, age 83, of Purcell, passed away unexpectedly at Norman Regional Hospital, after becoming ill as she prepared to go to her Purcell office. Services were held at Trinity United Methodist Church, Purcell, with services provided by Wilson-Little Funeral Home.

The second of five children born to Dr. Mell A. Nash and Mae Clarke Nash, she attended and graduated from Chickasha Public Schools and OK College for Women, in 1942, where her father was president from the Great Depression years till WWII. At the time of her death she was serving on the University's Foundation Board of Trustees.

She then began working for the War Dept., and OK Sen. Josh Lee, in Washington, D.C., where she met and married William Hanna Mendenhall. They were wed but 2-1/2 years when the 25 year old Lt. Mendenhall's submarine, the USS Lugarto, was struck during battle by the Japanese ship, Hatsutaka, on May 3, 1945. He and 85 other crewman lie on "Eternal Patrol" in the Gulf of Thailand, undisturbed in their WWII war grave.

Upon returning to OK with their daughter she graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Law, where she was a member of the First Law Review Board, Kappa Beta Pi and the Order of Coif. It was while practicing law in Edmond that she married fellow lawyer Henry H. Montgomery, and they established Montgomery and Montgomery Law Firm, in Purcell, which existed for more than 50 years.

Her Honors and memberships included: American College of Trust and Estate Council; 50-year member: McClain Co. Bar Assoc.; OK Bar, and the American Bar Assoc.; OK Bar and American Bar Assoc. Fellow ; OBA Spotlight Award; Neil E. Bogan Professionalism Award of OBA, 1993; First woman Assoc. Prof., OU School of Law; First woman Special Justice of the OK Supreme Court; First woman elected to an OBA office, V.Pres., 1978; Pres. of the OK Women's Lawyers Assoc.; Purcell Citizen of the Year: 1971 & 1994; 2002 Women in Communication By-Liner Award, as a 2001 finalist for the Journal Record Women of the Year; 2002 Univ. of Science and Arts of OK Alumni Hall of Fame; Chickasha Public Schools Hall of Fame; 50-year member of the Girl Scouts; a troop leader and officer of the Council; Order of the Eastern Star; Kappa Kappa Gamma; Pres. of the Purcell School Board; a Founder and the first Pres. of the Purcell Public School Foundation; Trustee of the OK Foundation of Excellence; the Purcell Municipal Hospital Foundation and the USAO Foundation.

As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church she served as lay leader, children's Sunday school teacher and chairman of the Board of Trustees.

In 2001, she married Robert D. Looney Sr., a 50-year member of OK Bar Assoc.,of OKC., and they resided in both Purcell and OKC.

Preceding her in death: her parents; her husbands, Lt. Cmdr. Mendenhall and Henry Montgomery, who died in 1998; her daughter, Dr. Holly Montgomery Rose; and brothers, David and Carl Nash.

Survivors: her husband; daughters, Nancy Ford, (William), Shawnee, and Sally Clayton, (Craig), San Antonio, TX; and son-in-law, David Rose, Tulsa; brothers, Capt. Norman C. Nash, Alexandria, Va., and Donald R. Nash, McAllen, TX; grandchildren; Jayne Morris, Anne Wallace, Joseph Ford, Jennifer Lawson, Daniel Rose and Amy and Austin Clayton; great-grandchildren, William and Elizabeth Morris; her husband's children, Robert Looney Jr. and wife, Anne, Carole Hill and husband, John, and John Looney; and many step-grand and great-grandchildren.
