Richard C. Sare, 91, of Carmel, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at the St. Vincent Hospice Center in Indianapolis.He was born May 18, 1918, in Bloomington, Indiana, to Craig and Thursa Sparks Sare.Richard graduated from Bloomington High School and Indiana University.He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Geneva E. Rushton Sare. They have two daughters, Rebecca A. Lane and Trudy G. Yates (Michael). Richard is also survived by four grandchildren, Angela Mendenhall, Gregory Sylvester (Kim), Shelbie Spiller (James), and Shana Bontreger (Kristian); eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by one sister, Maxine Curry; two brothers, Rufus Sare and Jack Sare.He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Don Sare and Walter Sare; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Bontreger.Richard was a school teacher before being offered a job in Washington D.C. with Farmers Home Administration. He was then drafted and served in the Army during World War II. After serving he moved to Indianapolis and resumed work for Farmers Home Administration. The family later moved back to Bloomington where he worked the next 28 years, until his retirement, for Indiana University in the Machine Accounting Department.Richard is past Master of the Monroe Masonic Lodge #22 and Past Patron of the Bloomington Chapter #223 of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was an active member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington before moving to Fishers, and then settling in Carmel.Besides enjoying time with his family, he was an avid race car fan who did not miss an Indy 500 race in 50 years! He was also a huge I.U. fan.Richard will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Carmel Care, St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel and St. Vincent Hospice for the wonderful care they gave to Richard.Funeral services for Richard will be held Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Allen Funeral Home, 4155 South Old Highway 37. Reverend Tom Ellsworth will preside. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The Herald-Times, September 25, 2009
