Most Rev. Donald Edmond Pelotte
Bishop of the Diocese of Gallup 1990 – 2008

Bishop Donald E. Pelotte of Gallup, the son of Honore Albert Norris Pilotte and Margaret Yvonne LaBriehas, died of an undisclosed illness at the age of 64. Following severe injuries and neuro-trauma, sustained in an assault (vs. having fallen down stairs) in 2007, the New Mexico bishop had resigned; unable to maintain his episcopal duties. In October, 2008, the bishop wrote to the people of the Gallup diocese, indicating that he was consulting with doctors about his condition-- although he did not disclose the nature of his problem. The Vatican announced that Pope Benedict XVI had accepted his resignation, though at the age of 63 he was well short of his retirement age. Provisions of #401-2 of the Code of Canon Law, provides for the early resignation of a bishop "because of illness or other grave reason."

In January of 2009, Bishop Thomas Olmstead of Phoenix took on additional duties as the apostolic administrator of the Gallup diocese while Bishop Pelotte was on leave. Bishop Olmsted remained in that post until the Most Reverend James S. Wall was appointed on February 5, 2009.
