Charles William Adrian (Carl Christian Wilhelm Adrian), son of Prussian immigrants Karl Johann Heinrich Adrian and Caroline F Klee, was born December 21, 1869, in Wolcottsville, Niagara County, New York. At a very early age he moved with his parents and grandparents to Michigan settling in Krakow Township, Presque Isle County.

On 14 Aug 1895, he was joined in matrimony with Lena Fournier at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church in Alpena. Witnesses at Leah & Charles marriage by the Rev. C. H. DeQuay were Joseph LaLonde & Emma Krammer, both of Alpena.

1900 U.S. Federal Census for Maple Ridge Township, Alpena, Michigan, enumerated on 09 Jun 1900, confirms that Charles and Lena have been married about 5 years. They have two children but only one is living. They own their own home. Charles' occupation is listed simply as "day laborer". Household members include parents and one daughter:

Name Age
Charles Adrian 29 (Head, b. Michigan, both parents born and emigrated from Germany, married 5 years, occupation: day laborer)
Lena Adrian 28 (Wife, b. Michigan, both parents born and emigrated from English Canada, married 5 years, mother of 2 but only 1 living, keeping house)
Martha Adrian 3 (Daughter, b. Michigan)

Lena and Charles were divorced in 1902.* (See note below from Nancy (Bartz) Zoromski, 2015-02-13.)

Charles moved his family from Maple Ridge Township into Alpena. It is not know for sure if this was before or shortly after Lena's passing.

On 09 Jul 1902 Charles was united in marriage with Emma Brick-Heiderman at Immanuel Ev Lutheran Church-LCMS by the Rev. H. H. Heidel. Witnesses were Heinrich Adrian and Rose Brick. Emma also apparently was a widow and had a young daughter Mathilda. During the next years, the couple would cement the blended families with two children of their own, a son, Clarence, and a daughter Florence. They rented at home at 1111 First Street for $15.00/month. Charlie's occupation is listed as "mill laborer". The 1910 U.S. Census list the household members of parents and 5 children:
Name Age
Charlie Adrian 40 (Head, b. New York of German immigrant parents, married 8 years in second marriage, rents home, occupation: mill laborer)
Emma Adrian 33 (Wife, b. Michigan of German immigrant parents, married 8 years in second marriage, mother of 4 children, keeping house)
Martha Adrian 13 (Daughter, b. Michigan, not listed as attending school)
Matilda Adrian 12 (Daughter, b. Michigan, not listed as attending school)
Clarence Adrian 6 (Son, b. Michigan, not listed as attending school)
Florence Adrian 5 (Daughter, b. Michigan)

By the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, the family has purchased their own home on 2nd Avenue. Oldest daughter Martha had married in 1917 and established her own home. Although difficult to read, it appears that Charles' occupation was as a "teamster for the city". It should also be noted that Matilda, Emma's daughter from her first marriage, is now listed as "Alma" and with her birth father's surname "Heideman". The household members include:
Name Age
Charles W Adrian 50 (Head, b. Michigan, home owner, occupation: teamster for city)
Emma A Adrian 43 (Wife, b. Michigan, keeping house)
Florence Adrian 15 (Daughter, b. Michigan, attending school)
Clarence Adrian 16 (Son, b. Michigan, Single, no longer attending school. no outside occupation listed)
Alma Heideman 21 (Daughter, b. Michigan, Single, occupation: clerk in clothing store)

During the 1920's Charles moved his family to Flint for better employment at the auto factories there. Per the 1930 census, they are living at 1046 Foss Avenue. Son Clarence is the only offspring still at home. Charles' occupation is stock handler at auto factory. Household members include parents and son:
Name Age
Charles Adrian 64 (Head, Owns home valued at $1,100. Married 1st time at age 26, Occupation: stock handler at auto factory)
Emma Adrian 54 (Wife, Married 1st time at age 22, home maker)
Clarence Adrian 27 (Son, Single. Occupation: truck driver)

It is not know for sure by this researcher when Charles and family returned to Alpena. However, the Alpena Immanuel Ev Lutheran Church death records show upon his passing he left a wife, 1 son, and 4 daughters.

Charles died 17 Feb 1946, at the age of 76 Years, 1 Months, 27 Days, 26 Days. He was buried February 20, 1946, Evergreen Cemetery - Alpena, Michigan
