Sperdon A. "Speed" Kahalley - a native of Brewton, AL and a resident of Mobile, AL died Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the age of 91.

Mr. Kahalley was a 1937 graduate of McGill Institute and a veteran of the United States Army. In 1946, a year after returning home from service in World War II, Mr. Kahalley, along with his brother, Edward, opened Model Grocery at 167 State Street. Mr. Kahalley took sole ownership of the business in 1954 after buying his brother's share. He retired in 1995 after 49 1/2 years in business. At the time of it's closure, Model Grocery was Mobile's oldest continuous operating retail grocery store. Mr. Kahalley was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Lebanese-American Club of Mobile. He also served as Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus, Mobile Council #666.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abdallah "Albert" Kahalley and Zakia Zoghby Kahalley; one brother, Michael P. Kahalley; and two sisters, Lourice K. Pierce and Florence H. Kahalley. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Amelia Saliba Kahalley; two brothers, Edward J. Kahalley and Albert M. (Celine) Kahalley; two sisters, Melvina M. Kahalley and Nazha K. Belmany; five children, Stephen (Helen) Kahalley, Patricia (Charles) Hyland, William (Beth) Kahalley, Barbara J. Kahalley, Melanie (John) Joseph; nine grandchildren, Michael E. Hyland, Stephanie L. Kahalley, David C. Hyland, Matthew A. Kahalley, Sarah E. Kahalley, Bridget C. Kahalley, W. Mitchell Kahalley, Jonathan E. Kahalley, John F. Joseph, Jr; one great-grandchild, Juliian Z. Kahalley; one sister-in-law, Jackie Kahalley; as well as many other family members and friends.

Visitation will be at Radney Funeral Home, Dauphin Street, on Friday, January 15, 2010 from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. with the Rosary at 7 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 P.M. on Saturday, January 16, 2010 from St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be in Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1655 McGill Avenue, Mobile, AL 36604. Funeral arrangements by RADNEY FUNERAL HOME, 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama 36606.
