According to the writing on the back of the photo showing her in the white dress and hat, her name in Norway was Randi Thomasdatter Thoengen. Her parents were Thomas T. & Synnove (Johansdatter) Thoengen. Ragna came to America as an adult where she and her siblings who also came to America simplified their last names to "Thompson." Her parents remained on the Thoengen place in Hallingdal, Berksrud, Norway.

According to the Norway Church Books at Familysearch.org, her baptism was recorded with her given name as "Randi" b. 6 May 1887 and the baptism taking place on 15 May 1887 in Nes, Buskerud, Norway in the local parish. The given name of her mother was recorded as "Sunneiv," which is how Leif Thoengen referred to her.
