His parents were George and Mary Hines Flory; both are said to have died in Buffalo, NY. He was one of six children. The others were George, Jr., who was killed in a duel; Madeline, who married a French officer and died leaving four children; Anthony, who settled in Ottawa, IL; Mary, who settled in Buffalo, NY and Frank, who settled in Franklin, TN. The family moved to America in 1830 and Abram came to Newark in 1847. He bought the business of Wiley Davis which was destroyed by fire in 1863. In 1872 he started a real estate business, Flory and Havens.
