James "Milo" Dowden was the son of William Clemencious Dowden and Amanda Jane Pearce Dowden. Milo married Hattie May Leak on 1 March 1900. They had one daughter, Ruth I. Dowden, born about 1903.

In the 1900 USFC of Union Twp., Hendricks Co., IN Milo's household was No. 59, pg. 295A. No. 63 was a "Leak." In the USFC 1920 enumeration of Lizton town, the James M. Dowden household, No. 62, was the last on the list. The farm settled by Hattie Leak's grandfather, William Leak, adjoined the town of Lizton. Whether Milo's property in Lizton was carved out of (or was) William Leak's has not been ascertained.

Milo suffered a stroke while visiting his farm checking on stock on a Monday and was taken to Witham Hospital in Lebanon where he died of cerebral hemorrage on Tuesday.

According to his obituary published in "The Republican" of 18 April 1940, James Milo Dowden was born in Franklin county (Posey?) arriving in the Lizton community in 1882 with his family. He owned and operated his father's hardware store for 23 years, then, when Milo went into banking, working at the bank started by his brother-in-law, J. Leak, [then] the hardware store was owned and operated by his brother, William Willis Dowden. Milo was a member of Knights of Pythias, and was a Mason.

Funeral service was conducted by Rev. R. Richmond Blake, and the lodge. Milo was survived by his wife and daughter, Ruth Dowden, a teacher in schools in Lockwood, OH.
