Madeline A. Frey, 89, of Lebanon passed away early Friday morning.

Madeline was born in Redfield, S.D., the daughter of John and Anna (Ecker) Albrecht. She grew up near Redfield where she attended and completed her schooling. She moved with her family to Mount Angel in 1938. She married Sylvester "Sly" Frey in Mount Angel on Jan. 8, 1946. The couple moved to Lebanon, where they operated the Lebanon Sandwich Shop. They later operated the Bungalow Tavern in Albany, ran a cattle ranch in Arock and Weiser, Idaho, and the Santiam Butchers in Sweet Home. In 1959, the couple purchased the Lebanon Auction Yard, which they operated until retiring in 1989.

Madeline was a woman of deep faith and felt security in the care of a powerful God. She was actively involved in St. Edward's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar Society and Legion of Mary. She also enjoyed music, reading and visiting the sick and helping those in need. She was a woman of courage who had a devotion to God, her family and community.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester "Sly" Frey in 2002; brother Roy Albrecht; and two sisters, Frances Albrecht and Monica Hubert.

She is survived by her daughters, Janice Horner and husband Sam Eicher of Albany, Judith and husband Kenneth England of Sweet Home, Ann and husband Duane Cummins of Madras, Sylvia Frey and husband Wayne Puttbrese of Lebanon and Robin Castle of St. Louis, Mo.; son Tony and wife Terry Frey of Lebanon; 16 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A recitation of the rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edwards Catholic Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home.

The family requests memorial contributions be sent to St. Edward's Catholic Church Teens or Samaritan Evergreen Hospice in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97355.
