JOHN SMITH BARNEY
Longtime educator John Smith Barney died Friday at Community Hospital in Springfield. He was 70. The Urbana resident was born in Wheelersburg, but for 36 years lived in Waynesville, where he served six years on the school board. Mr. Barney earned his undergraduate and master's degree in botany from Ohio University and worked toward a doctorate at the University of Notre Dame. He taught biology at the University of Dayton.
The father of six was an avid chess player, golfer and author who published Porter Township, a book about growing up.
Mr. Barney is survived by his wife, Patricia Weller Barney; his children, John Barney II of Waynesville; Jim Barney of Baltimore, Ohio; Chris Barney of Holland, Mich.; Tim Barney of Vandalia; Patricia Barney of Wilmington, Ohio; and Tad Barney of Milford, Ohio; eight grandchildren and five daughters-in-law. Services will be at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Wheelersburg.
