Army Spc Wright was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Washington. On January 12, he was on a Stryker Brigade Combat Team and was driving an armored vehicle when it rolled over an explosive. He was on his first combat tour, where his team worked to fight drug and weapons trafficking. After the bomb exploded under the driver's seat, Wright was pulled from the wreckage where he died surrounded by military friends. Kyle's journey to join the military began when he wanted to follow the path his father and grandfather had chosen. But what set his desire in stone was sitting in a classroom watching the Twin Towers fall. He joined the Marine Corps JROTC program at Romeoville High School in Romeoville, Illinois, where he graduated in 2006. After graduation, he joined the Army on September 1 and was based in Fort Lewis, Washington. Kyle's high intelligence and quickness to learn earned him a place in the Defense Language Institute. He was immersed in Arabic 10 hours a day for a year and his writing in Arabic was like artwork. Kyle was on his first deployment in Afghanistan, where he was interested in improving the lives of women and used his fluency in Arabic to explain the culture to fellow soldiers. He was tough, smart, brave and wildly popular with his fellow soldiers. He was also giving, courageous and someone who loved to crack jokes, pull pranks and listened to the problems of the soldiers fighting next to him. Skateboarding was among his interests and he had earned a contract to compete semi-professionally before joining the Army. Just before Christmas, Kyle took on a new assignment. He got behind the wheel of an armored vehicle and drove 10 other soldiers on missions to secure the main highways of southern Afghanistan in the Taliban heartland. This was not Kyle's job, but he was glad to help out in any way he could.
