Julius Andrew Mood Jr. was appointed as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry on March 21st, 1917; served with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, to July 20th, 1918; promoted First Lieutenant on June 3rd, 1917; promoted to Captain, temporary, on May 2nd, 1918; overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces from June 14th, 1917, to July 20th, 1918; killed in action on July 20th, 1918, near Soissons, France.

For his actions in July 1918 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for "...extraordinary heroism in action during the fighting of July 19 - 21, 1918, near Soissons, France. Captain Mood voluntarily exposed himself to fire repeatedly in order to get information and direct operations, and was killed while leading a battalion to the attack.”
