She was born June 2, 1942, in Cabool, Mo., the third child of Velmer and Eula Riley Whitson.
She worked at Wal-Mart for many years. She was past president for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 852 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed being a homemaker, cooking, volunteering and gardening.
She married Theodore "Ted" Howell on June 10, 1960. They shared 49 years of marriage. He died in August 2009.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bob and Kenneth; a daughter, Jamie; and a son, Stephen.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas and Andrew, both of Lawrence, and David and wife Sherry, Gardner; a daughter, Rebecca Howell, Lawrence; two brothers, Loyd Whitson and companion Judy Gragg, Lawrence, and Larry Whitson and wife Darla, Lawrence; a sister, Roma Wisdom and husband Terry, Eudora; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
The family suggests memorials to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 852 Ladies Auxiliary, 138 Ala., Lawrence, KS 66044.
