LAKELAND -- During the years that the Rev. James O. Deal served in the ministry, he ministered at several churches, established four home missions and served in home and foreign missions.

The retired Nazarene minister died of cancer Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2005) at Good Shepherd Hospice. He was 87.

"He was always busy about the Lord's work," said his son, Darrell Deal of Lakeland. "That is what he loved to do. He loved helping people and working with people. He loved his church and loved people."

Born in Lincoln County, Tenn., on May 19, 1917, he came to Lakeland from there in 1934. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, stationed at Camp Wolters, Texas, and attended Mineral Wells Church of the Nazarene while in the service. It was during this time that he was called to preach in the ministry of the Rev. I.W. Justice. He received his theological degree in 1951 from Trevecca Nazarene College.

The Rev. Deal established his first home mission church in Plant City and ministered at Crystal Lake Nazarene in Lakeland and a home mission church in Auburndale. He was instrumental in building churches through his foreign missions.

"He was a working witness team leader for the Nazarene church. He would get a team of lay people and they would go to the Caribbean, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Honduras . . .," Darrell Deal said, noting that his father did this for about 10 to 12 years. "Every year or two they would get a group together and they would go down and build a church. He got called back several times when they would have a homecoming."

The Rev. Deal retired in 1982.

He was active in the Nazarene Amateur Radio Fellowship, corresponding through ham radios to missionaries in other countries. He was a member of Lake Gibson Nazarene Church.

In addition to his son, Darrell Deal, the Rev. Deal is survived by his wife of 64 years, Talma Deal; daughter, Teresa Curby, Lakeland; sons, Jerry Deal, Alton Deal, and Lloyd "Tom" Deal, all of Lakeland; brother, Charlie Deal, Lakeland; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Gentry-Morrison Northside Chapel. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lake Gibson Nazarene Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lake Gibson Nazarene Church for foreign missions.
