Erwin J. Balliet, a well-known printer, was the son of the late Edmund J. and Caroline (nee Donner) Balliet. He was born in this city and resided here all his life time. His home was with Lieutenant James A. Medlar, whose wife is a cousin, at No. 106 North Sixth street. At the age of 18 he learned the printing trade in the office of Huber & Haines, who published the Register. He worked in the various offices in this city and at one time worked at Bethlehem. For the last eighteen years, he was employed by William F. Schlechter in the Republikaner office. He was an able translator from the English into the German and of invaluable service to Mr. Schlechter. He took great interest in Masonry, and in this he really was an enthusiast. Joseph E. Balliet, paying teller of the Allentown National Bank, is his uncle, and David Sanders, the receiving teller, a cousin. Mrs. George Metzger, Mrs. Frank Hunsberger and Edward J. Balliet, of this city, are the surviving sisters and brothers. Deceased had many friends. He read extensively. His mind was active and he was unselfish and always willing to impart what he had read or observed.
