Obituary from the "Republican" of Waupaca, Wisconsin dated 4 Apr 1902:
Sumner Packard - Another
Old Pioneer Gone.
The Republican is pained to chronicle the demise of one of its oldest subscribers, Sumner Packard of Dayton township. He died Saturday, March 29, 1902, and was almost 78 years of age. He lived with his daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Barrington of Crystal Lake, and he was a brother-in-law of Hon. P. A. Ham.
He was a life long Republican politically, and was a most exemplary and worthy citizen and Christian man in all the walks of life. After a ripe old age he has gone to his reward and will be mourned by many. Rev. Coffeen of Almond was the officiating minister at the funeral which was held at the Union Church, Crystal Lake, Monday afternoon, at two o'clock. A large concourse of friends being present to pay honorable respect to the deceased.
Sumner Packard was born in Cummington, Mass., April 6, 1824, and died at Crystal Lake, Wis., March 29, 1902, of paralysis. In the year 1833 he with his father's family moved from Mass. to Ohio, where he lived until 1851. About this time he was married to Jane Eaton who died five years later at the early age for 22 years. Two children were born to them, a boy and girl both of whom died in childhood. In 1852 he came to Crystal Lake and has lived on the same farm fifty years. In 1860 he was married to Didama Ham, a sister of Hon. P. A. Ham, who died about eight years ago. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Giles Radley and Mrs. W. H. Barrington, an adopted son, five grandchildren and other relatives.
The loss is not to his family alone, the community has lost one of the best exemplars it ever had, and the world has lost a good man.

He married (1) Almira Jane Eaton 14 Nov 1850 in Fredonia, Licking, Ohio.
He married (2) Juliet Diadema Ham 3 May 1860 in Freedom, Portage, Ohio.
