As an adult he learned the trade of meat cutting in his Aunt's (Lois NeSmith) grocery store. After which he was a carpenter and worked for the Pierce Carpentry and Construction Company in Orlando, Florida.
Jay married Leslie Vivian on July 17th, 1982 in Orlando, Florida. They had two children Nicole Lynn and J. Frank Cook.
He died of natural causes while visiting realitives in South Caroline and his final memorial services on August 21st, 1997 were conducted by the Rev. Clark T Olson-Sawyer.
