1937 - 2010

Retired US Navy Chief James Edward Wheeler, 72, died January 11, 2010 at Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Inpatient Residence, surrounded by his family after a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Mr. Wheeler was born September 21, 1937 in Jasper, Florida. He was the son of the late Della Spradley and Marvin Wheeler. He entered the Navy in 1954. He went to Pensacola, Florida for an assignment where he met the love of his life, June Nelson, and they were married November 8, 1962 in Pensacola. He served proudly in the US Navy for 20 years with fond memories of his time aboard the USS New Jersey. After retiring he worked for Naval Hospital Power Plant for 20 years. He was a member of the Pensacola Branch Fleet Reserve Unit 22.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, J.B. Wheeler and Marvin (Buddy) Wheeler; sisters, Kathryn H. Dykes and infant girl, Wheeler.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, June; daughter, Valerie L. Davis (John) of Cantonment, Florida; and son, Gerry L. Wheeler (Sylvia) of Pace, Florida; three grandchildren, Charlotte Davis, Amy Wheeler and Christopher Wheeler; two step-grandchildren, John (JJ) Davis and Adam Davis; one step-great-grandchild, Leslie Davis; sisters, Eunice Cravey, Thelma Chauncey, Dorothy Johnson, Betty Ann Stumph (Daryl), June Walker (Rufus), Charlotte Collins, Alice Anderson; brother, CA Wheeler (Mary); many nieces and nephews in Lake City, Florida and extended Nelson Family in Pensacola, Florida and special little buddy, Noah Nelson.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North-Cantonment on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a Fleet Reserve Service at 6:00 pm. Funeral services for Mr. Wheeler will be conducted on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 11:00 am at Dees-Parish Family Funeral Home in Lake City, Florida with Pastor Ron Williamson officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lake City, Florida.
Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews.
A special thanks to the staff of Hospice and to Dr. Tan and his staff of Woodlands Medical Specialist.
