Funeral for Delmer Oliver Bagwell, 84, of Decatur will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Brooks Barkley officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at the funeral home and requests any memorials be made to Hospice of Morgan County.

Mr. Bagwell died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at Summerford Nursing Home. He was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Morgan County. He spent 40 years as an educator beginning his career at Gum Pond Elementary School. He was coach at Union Hill High School from 1940 to 1950. His 1950 team won Morgan County's first boys state basketball championship. He served as principal at Union Hill and Cotaco School from 1951 to 1965, and also served as coordinator for federal programs at schools in Morgan County. After retiring, he worked with the Teachers Federal Credit Union. He was a member of Morgan County Sports Hall of Fame. An active member of Southside Baptist Church, he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member and on various committees. He was the father of the late Steve Bagwell of Decatur.

He is survived by his wife, Edeleth Bagwell; one son, Joe Bagwell of Nashville, Tenn.; four brothers, Lewis Bagwell of Birmingham, J.C. Bagwell of Fort Myers, Fla., Leno Bagwell and Rex Bagwell, both of Arab; two sisters, Lottie Bagwell Witt of Hot Springs, Ark., and Eloise Bagwell Cagle of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be George Nancarrow, J.D. Light, Bill Chapman, Oliver Meredith, Willard Hadley and Theo Hadley.

Deacons of Southside Baptist Church and members of his former basketball teams will serve as honorary pallbearers.
