A true member of "the greatest generation!" John Martin Holder, 86, of Hapeville, died Saturday, June 20, 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gloria Nash Holder, children - John and June Holder, Roswell; Mark and Susan Holder, Douglasville, sister, Elizabeth Holder Worley, Perry. Grandchildren - Dawn Holder, Serena Holder, Sean Holder, Lt. Joel Holder, Landon Holder and Jake Holder.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Martin grew up on his parents' farm and helped with the family grocery store and gas pumps. He attended and graduated from Hapeville High School in 1940 where he was voted "best all-around student" and received the Atlanta Journal Silver Loving Cup for this honor.

He continued his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology and later joined the U.S. Air Corps in 1942. There he was trained as a Bombsite Mechanic and Aerial Gunner, in the highly technical, secret and classified duty, and he served as a crew member on the B17 and B24.

When Martin returned home, he took over the family business and changed it to Holder Tire and Auto Service. He continued his education and received a Bachelor's Degree in Commercial Science from Georgia State University in 1949 and a Law Degree from Woodrow Wilson Law School in 1952. Martin is a 60-year member of the Hapeville First United Methodist Church. He served on the Administrative Board, as Church Treasurer, Chairman of Finance and Chairman of Board of Trustees.

He also served many years as Director with the Hapeville Chamber of Commerce which later changed to the Airport Area Chamber of Commerce. Martin was on the Advisory Board of First Bank of Georgia at the Hapeville Branch and served for 10 years, with two years as Vice-President on the Hapeville Development Authority.

A charter member of the Hapeville Exchange Club which began in 1946, Martin served as Board of Control, Secretary, Vice President and President. In 1955, Martin joined the Traveler's Protective Association, served on the Board of Directors and as President and Safety Chairman. He also served positions on the state level as Board of Director, and as Ritual Chairman and President.

Funeral services will beheld at 11am Tues, Jun 23, 2009, at the Hapeville First United Methodist Church with Paul Willis officiating, remains in state at 10am. Interment, College Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hapeville First United Methodist Church, 3510 Atlanta Avenue, Hapeville, GA 30354.
