Joseph William Fortier, 88, formerly of Arkansas City, died Friday (January 1, 2010) at the Sterling House of Denton, Texas. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday (January 11, 2010) at the Trinity Episcopal Church of Arkansas City. Burial will follow in Parker Cemetery. Mother Betty Glover will officiate.

Joe was born April 4, 1921, in Mulvane, Kansas, to Joseph B. and Hazel Mae (Williamson) Fortier. He was reared and educated in Hutchinson, graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1937. He later attended Oklahoma City University before joining the United States Army in 1939. He was discharged from the Army and joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He married Susan Breuer on July 14, 1944 in Maplewood, Missouri. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Joe was discharged from Army Air Corps in 1949 and joined the Air Force Reserve. He later retired from reserve status in 1968 and fully retired from USAF, as a Lieutenant Colonel, in 1981. Joe worked as an insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Company and retired after twenty-five years of service. He was a longtime member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Spencer-Ralston Post #1254 VFW and the Sheldon Beatty Post #18.

Survivors include a daughter Beverly and her husband Ted Cline of Corinth, Texas; two sons James W. and his wife Kim Fortier of Corinth, Texas, Dr. Philip D. and his wife Nancy Fortier of North Richland Hills, Texas; a sister Joan McCormick of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; nine grandsons; and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Susan in 2000, a son Joseph A. Fortier, sister Patsy Lou Roberts and a grandson G. Isaac Fortier.

A memorial has been established with Trinity Episcopal Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
