Joseph Holland Barrett died unexpectedly Nov. 13 at United Medical Center-West in Cheyenne, the morning after a celebration of 50 years of life.

He was born Nov. 10, 1954, in Cheyenne.

Joe married the love of his life, Kathleen Padilla, on Aug. 24, 1990, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne.

Joe leaves behind his three beloved children, Colleen Marie Barrett of Santa Monica, Calif., Nolan Paulo Padilla of Hollywood, Calif., and Reed Joseph Barrett of Cheyenne.

Joe's surviving brothers and sisters are: James Hays Barrett, Michael Dennis Barrett, Patrick Curran Barrett, all of Cheyenne, Laurence Francis Barrett of Denver, Francis Donoghue Barrett of Casper, Alice Catherine Clement of Parker, Colo., and Mary Therese Orton of Longmont, Colo. Joe is also survived by two uncles, Martin Holland of Los Alamos, N.M., and James E. Barrett of Cheyenne; and an aunt, Marialyce Tobin of Casper. Joe had numerous nieces and nephews, who considered him to be the world's greatest uncle.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Francis A. and Harriett P. Barrett.

Joe will be missed by his many friends, who greatly admired his tremendous sense of humor and love of life. Joe entertained all who knew him with his sharp wit, musical talents and charismatic personality.

Joe graduated from St. Mary's School and attended the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Joe spent his 28-year career as an engineer for the Union Pacific Railroad.

He was an active member and legislative representative for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, Cheyenne Division No. 115. In recent years, Joe developed his talents as a writer with the publication of his column in a local newspaper. Joe's love of politics led to his involvement as a commentator for Cheyenne television and radio and as an active member of the Laramie County Democratic Party.
