Upon arriving in Vietnam David was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. While participating in Operation Pike, Charlie Company encountered hostile forces, 6 kilo-
meters south southeast of Thang Binh. David died during the fire fight as a result of hostile gunshot wounds through the abdomen from rifle fire.
