Jesse was born in Nashville, TN in 1817. He was the 1st boy of 11 children born to Younger & Lydia McCauslin. At the age of 6 he lost his left hand. Later, he became a Private in Tennessee in the 18th Infantry Regiment in Co H in the Civil War.

When he was older, he ran a mercantile company in Missouri. The family then moved to Illinois where they all became Mormons. He married LaCrecia (Tempey) Durham in 1839. She died in childbirth w/ their 2nd child in 1842. He started from Kanesville in Apr 1851 w/ the Erasmus Snow Co.

He met Mary Jane McCauslin there & they married. On the wagon train, Mary Jane died, leaving Jesse with 3 children to raise.

Nancy Ellen, Mary's little sister was also on the wagon train & when they reached Salt Lake they married in Oct. 1851. They moved to Provo and had 8 children together. He was in the mercantile business.Jesse was a quiet, unassuming man & well loved. He died in 1884.
