ROBERT F. BARNES
One of two children, I was born October 17, 1917. My first military training was at the Citizens' Military Camp in July, 1935. I also had two years of ROTC Military Engineers training at Oregon State College. I was sworn into the Service February 19, 1941 at Vancouver Barracks, sent to Presidio, and then to Hamilton Field, California. In June, 1941 I went to Curtis Wright Tech and then to Headquarters, 51st Fighter Group in December. In January of 1942, I shipped out to India via Australia, and in July, 1942 I arrived at Kunming, China. I joined the 75th Fighter Squadron at Hengyang late in July. We were run out of Hengyang and moved to Chanyi, but we returned to Hengyang many times.
Before I received my orders home in 1944, I was stationed at Yunnanyi, Kunming, Lingling, and Kweilin, in addition to Chanyi and Hengyang. I arrived home on October 8, 1944, was assigned to Luke Field, Phoenix, Arizona, and left the Service on September 15, 1945.
I married my wife Dores on May 19, 1945, and we moved to her hometown in 1946, where I went to work as a machinist. In November, 1975 I changed jobs and will retire January 6, 1983. Dores and I have two daughters, Donna Lynn and Beverly Frances.
