FORT RICHARDSON, Alaska --- A Fort Richardson paratrooper was killed on Jan. 7 in Afghanistan, the military announced Monday.

Sergeant First Class Jason O. B. Hickman, 35, of Kingsport, Tenn. died Thursday, Jan. 7, at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan of wounds suffered earlier that evening at Combat Outpost Bowri Tana, Afghanistan during an incident in which his post was hit by the explosion of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

Sergeant Hickman was a combat engineer assigned to A Company, Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, home-based at Fort Richardson.

He joined the Army in April 1999 and served in an engineer battalion at Fort Bragg, N.C, in a recruiting battalion in Wisconsin and in Iraq prior to arriving in Alaska in May 2008. The 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) deployed to Afghanistan in February and March 2009.
