Jonas A. “Steine” Jonasson

JONASSON, Jonas A “Steine” - Memorial service will be held Aug. 23 for Jonas A. “Steine” Jonasson, professor emeritus of Linfield College and former McMinnville mayor and city councilman. The services have been set for 2 p.m. Aug. 23 in First Baptist Church, McMinnville, with the Rev. Kent Harrop officiating.

Dr. Jonasson died 6 August 1997 in Salem. He was 93. He was born Dec. 26, in Svold, North Dakota, the son of Jon E and Gudrun Thorsteinn Jonasson. He was raised and schooled in Skagit County, Washington. He taught at Roseburg High School from 1926 to 1929. Wile at Roseburg he became friends with Charles Stanton, the former editor of The News-Review, as well as many former teachers and administrators of the Roseburg School District.

He and Frances Wright were married on Jan, 8, 1933.

Dr. Jonasson was a history teacher and a member of the administration at Linfield College from 1931 to 1969. He was chairman of the college history department from 1931 to 1963 and 1967 to 1968. He also was director of admissions from 1940 to 1943 and dean of admission from 1948 to 1969. He became professor emeritus in 1969. He took leave from his teaching career at Linfield to serve in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1947. He retired from the Air Force as a lieutenant colonel in 1964.

Survivors include two sons, David Jonasson of Roseburg and J. Frank Jonasson of San Diego, California; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Memorial contributions may be made to the 'Steine” Jonasson Endowed Lectureship Fund at Linfield College, in care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans St., McMinnville, 97128.
