CALVIN D. STOWELL.
UNEXPECTED DEATH OF A PROMINENT CITIZEN.

After an Illness of Five Days He Succumbs to Heart Disease –
Honorable and Active Business Career Closed – Funeral on Friday

Friends of Calvin D. Stowell, of the firm of J.D. Stowell, Son & Co., were stunned last evening by the announcement of the death of this well-known gentleman at his home on North Aurora street. But few aside from members of his household and his more intimate friends had learned that he was seriously ill, and when the news of his demise was passed from mouth to mouth it had the effect upon the community as of some unlooked for tragedy.

Mr. Stowell, who had not been especially well for several months was attacked last Thursday evening with angina pectoris. From the onset his condition was critical, but with the hope that his ailment would yield to medical treatment the gravity of the case was not made known to his aged father, the venerable John C. Stowell, who was 84 years old on the 20th of this month.

Yesterday afternoon Mr. Stowell seemed somewhat improved and his wife was induced to go out for a short drive. Upon her return she found her husband not quite so strong and shortly after 5 o’clock a decided change for the worse was apparent. A messenger was dispatched for a physician, but before his arrival the end had come.

Calvin Daniel Stowell, a native of Ithaca, the son of John C. and Marriette Stowell, was born January 25, 1846, and was a life long resident of this city. Graduating from Yale in 1868, he soon afterward entered into partnership with his father in the wholesale grocery trade and was actively engaged in that business from that time until his death. During the latter years he had borne the greater share of the burden of the business, gradually relieving his father of the cares and responsibilities incident to their business life.

In addition to his other business activities Mr. Stowell was a director of the First National Bank, a trustee of the City Hospital Association, trustee of the Ladies’ Union Benevolent Society and closely indentified with the Inlet Mission. Mr. Stowell was also a trustee and member of the First Presbyterian Church.

In December, 1878, Mr. Stowell was married to Amelia W. Esty, daughter of the late Senator Edward S. Esty. Mrs. Stowell, with one daughter Mary E., and two sons Edward E., and Harley L., survive.

He was a courtly, considerate gentleman who filled an honorable, prominent and important part in the community, to whom his death will be a grievous loss.

At the time of Mr. Stowell’s death his daughter and eldest son were out of the city, the former being at Springfield, Ohio, and the latter at Hamilton College. The son arrived here today. Miss Stowell will reach home tomorrow. The funeral will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon. The Rev. Dr. Stryker will officiate.
