David Coffin owned a farm and engaged in growing strawberries in the Jefferson district, now part of Santa Clara, near present-day Wilcox High School. His parents were Richard and Hannah (Whitten) Coffin. David was born December 14, 1814, in Maine.

David came to California by ship, venturing around Cape Horn to San Francisco. He married Martha W. Hall in 1849 (who was apparently a second cousin) and their marriage produced six children, of whom four lived past infancy.
