Emma J. Roos Dies In Idaho
Emma Jane Roos, 84, former Star Valley pioneer, resident, died at Sandpoint, Idaho, Oct 18, of bronchial pneumonia.
She was born April 28, 1875 at West Jordan Utah, the daughter of Samuel Swift Merritt and Emma Naylor. when she was 15 years of age her family moved to Weber, Utah. She went to work at an early age doing housework with long hours and low pay.
On Aug 9, 1893 she married Carl William Roos in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Star Valley in November that year settling first in Turnerville. In the spring of 1894 they returned to Utah, but came back to Star Valley again where they made their home in Bedford and later Afton. They lived briefly at Declo and Montpelier, Idaho but returned to Afton where they resided until moving to Sandpoint, Idaho in the spring of 1938.
Her husband preceded her in death, being killed at Ritzville, Wash Nov 24, 1939.
A strong and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints she kept her husband on a mission to Sweden for two years, caring for a farm and six children while he was gone. She served as a teacher in Sunday School and MIA and as an officer in the Relief Society.
With a family of seven children her home was always open to others and many stayed with her for a school year.
Funeral services were conducted in the South Bayer Ward at Sandpiont Oct 20 at 2 p.m. Burial was in the Park River
Cemetery.
She is survived by seven sons and daughters: Mrs Myrtle Gibson, Roy, Utah; Mrs eledla Hughes, Orofino, Idaho; Mrs Josie Madonis Window Rock Ariz; Samuel A. Roos Sandpoint, Idaho; Clifford W. Roos, Rock Springs, Wyo., Leonard V. Ross Afton, Wyo; Kenneth D. Roos, Sandpoint, Idaho; 20 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren; the following brothers and sisters: James Merritt Afton Wyo; Mrs Diana Blazzard, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs Delilah Walker, Afton, Wyo,; Mrs Vinnie Kirkbride, Preston, Idaho; Mrs Gertrude Kirkbride, Idaho Falls Idaho.
