From the Liberty (TX) Vindicator, Friday, September 1, 1922, p. 3:
Asa Abshier, an old citizen of the county died near Devers Tuesday. With a son he was returning home from Devers, when suddenly he got ill and expired within a few minutes.
From the Liberty (TX) Vindicator, Friday, September 15, 1922, p. 3:
Asa Abshier an old and highly respected citizen of Liberty county, died near Devers, August 29, 1922. He had almost reached the allotted time that is granted man -- being 69 years of age. Mr. Abshier was a product of Liberty county -- was born and reared here, grew into manhood and married and lived on. He was noble, sincere, kind-hearted and generous; to all he was a friend and everyone who entered his door was greeted with that most cordial southern hospitality. He was a true American citizen. Mr. Abshier is survived by a widow and eight children: Albert, Ivan, William, Edmond, Mrs. Robert Burlin, Mrs. Ambrose Dowdell, Mrs. Dewey Reavis and Mrs. Lola Wade.
To the bereaved ones we offer our sympathy, yet we know as our eyes are heaven-ward turned "that Thy will not ours be done."
"How strange it seems, with so much gone, of life and love to still live on! The dear face where upon that fitful firelight poled and shone, henceforward listen as we will, the voice of that hearth is still; Look where we may, the wide world o'er, that lighted face smiles no more. We turn the pages that he read. His written words we linger o'er, but in the sun they case no shade, no voice is heard, no sign is made, no step is on the conscious floor. Yet Love will dream and Faith will trust, since He who knows our need is just. That somehow, somewhere, meet we must."
