Sarah Luella Roush 82, of Indianapolis, died January 6, 2010. Sarah was born on May 8, 1927 in Fort Wayne, IN to the Clyde J. and Lucy Cover. Sarah grew up in Ft. Wayne, her family moving to Grabill, IN during WWII in order to be more self-sufficient growing huge victory gardens and tending orchards. Sarah and her sister were very involved with Girl Scouts while growing up, always attending camp during the summers. Sarah was an adventurous spirited young girl, adept in canoeing and archery. She graduated from Northside High School in Ft. Wayne and graduated from Hiram College in Ohio where she met the love of her life, Ben W. Roush, of Akron, OH. Sarah and Ben were married in 1950. They began their life together in Ft. Wayne where Sarah worked at Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital as a lab technician. She was enthralled by science and medicine her entire life. In 1959 they moved to Indianapolis with their three young daughters in order for Ben to take over as general agent of the Indianapolis office of Lincoln National Life Insurance. By 1960 with the birth of their son Ben Jr., their family was complete. Sarah devoted herself to raising their children being very involved in volunteer work at School 80 and Broad Ripple High School. She created an idyllic home life for her family. She was a lover of all creatures, always willing to raise orphaned animals including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, chickens, 3 opossums and a duck. Her work ethic and energy for projects was beyond compare whether she was wallpapering a room, sewing matching outfits for her children, wiring a light switch or refinishing furniture. Her family photography and the beautiful albums she created were truly masterpieces. She also took time to serve the community as a member of the Junior League and PEO organizations. After Ben and Sarah retired, they spent winters in Bonita Springs, Florida where Sarah became very involved in conservation efforts. She was an avid bird watcher and nature photographer. She loved to canoe through the mangrove swamps and walked the beaches searching for her treasured shells. She was most proud of her 10 years of service as a volunteer naturalist at the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary where she shared her passion for nature and birds with hundreds of visitors. Sarah and Ben had a wonderful retirement life together whether it was golfing, enjoying friends or traveling the world. Sarah was never more thrilled than when she and Ben traveled to Africa, Egypt, Alaska, and many parts of Europe with friends. She had a passionate love of learning. Ben passed away in 2003 after they had been married for 53 years. Sarah has lived at The Forum at the Crossing due to Alzheimer's disease for the past 6 years. In spite of her limitations, those years were rich with love and affection which Sarah shared with her family and all those she came in contact with.

Sarah leaves her wonderful legacy to her 4 children Dianne Trauring (Tom) of Kokomo, IN, Susan Fletcher (Greg) of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Nancy Carpenter (Jim) of Zionsville, IN, and Ben Roush Jr. (Renee) of Ft. Wayne, IN, plus 10 grandchildren Ryan Trauring, Laura Trauring Jarred, Jay Trauring, Stephen Fletcher, Sarah Fletcher, Rebecca Carpenter, Casey Carpenter, Kim Roush, Brittany Roush and Kyler Roush, plus 3 great grandchildren.
