Messer-Knowles cemetery-originally Henry now Butts Co. GA-
landlot #186/8th district. [GPS N33*25.122 W083*56.894]

The correct name for this cemetery is Messer-Knowles. It was set aside by James Knowles Sr. in a Butts Co. GA deed dated 29 October 1850 before he moved his small family to Dooly Co. in south Georgia. James Sr. had purchased this parcel or a nearby one from a William Messer in 1831. Before the move to Dooly Co. his 1850 Henry Co. census included daughters Martha and Elizabeth Knowles, son James B. Knowles, and his granddaughter, Lucy G Mercer -[described as 'niece Lucy' in the Journal of James B. Knowles who had returned to Henry Co. in November 1852]. Also in the 1850 family is perhaps a nephew J. A. Knowles, who is noted only as 'Abner' in the Journal-and never as a brother!

James B. Knowles' Journal-[an 1852-1858 diary now on the Henry Co. GA USGenWeb 'Archive Project' site}-provided names & dates for the burials here, through visits to the the graves of his mother Lucy Knowles, sister Christy Rebecca & her infant son. An Initial survey clearly indicated four sunken graves in the smaller portion-enough for Rebecca & son, Lucy Knowles, and perhaps her son-in-law-(a Messer?). Recent ground penetrating radar confirmed the number of graves and included the grave of an infant! It also indicated more than the three graves we found in the larger section

[The Williamson-Knowles cemetery is found about three miles from this location on land won in the 1821 State Land Lottery by Rev. Soldier John Williamson Sr. He came to Butts Co. from Jackson Co. GA about 1826, and his burial in October 1831 is the earliest known grave. His tombstone was placed in the fall of 1937-and was dedicated in Spring 1938 by the Butts Co. DAR-Mrs. John Lane, Regent. John Williamson's grandson Nathan C. Williamson came to Butts Co. shortly before the old man's death, and his grave-and those of three of his small children are beneath four stone vaults-defined as the 'waling of 4 graves with rock' in his 1855 estate records.. His widow Agness(Thompson)Williamson paid a Mr. Lemons $19.00 for those four monuments! The late Artis Knowles of Jackson City place a small marker for a deceased young brother.]
