Grace Reed Riley, daughter of John W. and Nancy Melvina Cox Reed was born November 17, 1883 on a farm near Kilwinning in Scotland County, Missouri and passed away December 17, 1972 at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

She attended the Robinson School near Kilwinning. As a young girl she became a member of the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian church and about 1907 transferred her membership to the Methodist Church in Downing.

On November 26, 1903, she was united in marriage to Jesse V. Riley. To them four children were born, Etta M., Iva L, J. Reed and Leo E.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Etta M., a grandson, William Riley Eager, a son-in-law Arden W. Eager, a grandson-in-law Thomas Spivey, by her parents, four sisters: Florentine Cook, Adelaide Mustoe, Nancy McRobert and Ina Poe and three brothers, Pete, Port, and Wes Reed.

She is survived by her two sons, Reed and his wife Helen, Leo and his wife Jenivee of Downing, her daughter Iva R. Eager of Memphis, eight grandchildren, Mrs. Perley (Betty) Smith of Queen City, Mrs. James (Brenda) Brush, Bob Riley of Peoria, Illinois, Mr and Mrs. William J. Riley of Downing, Mrs. Gorge (Barbara) Middleton of Springfield, Missouri, Lynda Spivey of Cahokia, Illinois, John A. Eager with the U.S. Navy, Mr and Mrs. James L. Eager of St. Louis, Missouri, by ten great grandchildren, David, Daniel and Deanne Smith, Kim, Kara, and Kyle Brush, Annette, Allison and Wayne Middleton and Gina Eager. She is also survived by one sister-in-law Mrs. Carrie Carter of Glenwood and many nieces and nephews.

She came to their farm home southwest of Downing as a bride and for 69 years she has been actively engaged in being a good wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, a kind and helpful neighbor and deeply interested in all her family and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 10, 1972, 2:00 at the United Methodist Church, in Downing, by the Payne Funeral Home, with the Rev John Gooch officiating. Soloist was Mrs. Treva Poe, Organist Mrs. Leota Moore. Body bearers were Jim Eager, Jim Brush, Robert Riley, Perley Smith, George Middleton and William J. Riley
