Jacob S. DeLawter, son of Alphesus and Mary Delawter, was born September 13, 1848 four miles south west of Logansport in Cass county, Indiana, near the Clymer cemetery, and departed this life June 9, 1914, aged 65 years, 8 months, and 26 days.

At the age of two and one half years with his parents he moved on the farm near the falls of Big Pipe Creek. When Jacob was able to walk to the Indian village through the woods which was two miles from their cabin home, his father took him to hear the Gospel preached by the Indians. At the age of fifteen years he was united with the Methodist church during a protracted meeting at what was known at that time as the Cross roads school house. Brother Hoback being the minister in charge and as the years passed by and he grew older, he grew stronger and firmer in the Christian faith.

On January 1st, 1871 he was united in marriage to Flora A. Shauman. To this union was born three sons and two daughters; Anna S., Chester D., Joseph N., and Hazel, living, Arthur V., dying in infancy.

He leaves to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and father; his wife, four children, five grandchildren, one brother Ezra W. DeLawter, of Detroit, Michigan, and three sisters Mrs. Newton Hoover, of Bunker Hill, Mrs. La??? Ross, of Somerset, Indiana, and Mrs. Sophia Lines, of Marion, Indiana.
