Veteran of World War II and Korean War -
Captain Alberta Viola Carlson graduated from Jamestown High School in June of 1933. She began her nursing career in September of 1939 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. She received her Diploma in Nursing from the University of Rochester on May 11, 1942. She volunteered and was commissioned in the United States Army, Nurse Corps and began service on September 1, 1943. She began her military nursing service at Halloran Hospital, Staten Island, New York. She also served in Hawaii, and then served overseas on Saipan with the 176th Station Hospital. She was promoted to First Lieutenant in May of 1945. Lieutenant Carlson was discharged from active military service in late 1945, having serve 15 months overseas during World War II. Alberta graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a Bachelor of Science in Education about 1949, following which she was an instructor and supervisor in pediatric nursing at the University of Kansas Medical Center from about 1949 through July 1951 when she was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. After being recalled she served overseas at Osaka Army Hospital, Osaka, Japan and then transferred to the 11th Evacuation Hospital, Wonju, Korea in late 1952. She was promoted to rank of Captain in November of 1955.
