William "Bill" Hurtt was born in New Bern, North Carolina to Daniel and Henrietta Gautier Hurtt. Following schooling, Mr. Hurtt learned the plumbing trade and worked with his father in New Bern. He married Wilma Gillikin of Bridgeton, North Carolina in 1939 and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he work in the shipyards during the World War II period. Following the war, he and his family removed to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and then to Northfield, New Jersey, where he remained and operated William K Hurtt Plumbing & Heating until his death in 1987. He and his wife had two children; Barbara, born in 1940, and Sharon, born in 1948.

He is a direct decendant of John Howland of the Mayflower, William Tisdale of New Bern who created the original Great Seal of North Carolina, and Major Daniel Washington Hurtt of New Bern and of the 2nd North Carolina Infantry, CSA.
