The following from Sally Terral:

S H was a graduate of the University of Mississippi (Oxford), receiving a Doctor of Laws in the first graduating law school class in 1858. He was a Supreme Court Judge of the State of MS from 1897 until his death in 1903.

He signed the Ordinance of Secession from the Union (NSDAR application # 458470) in 1861.

He was a Major in Company C of the 37th Regiment of Mississippi Infantry (which he joined 13 March 1862 in Quitman) in the Civil War which was known as Cantey's Brigade under Brig. General C.M. Shelley. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

He practiced law in Quitman for many years and served as District Attorney and Circuit Judge from 1882 till 1891(?).

Was a Mason; the Masonic Lodge in Quitman is named for him.
