Betty Irene Butts, 87, of Nacogdoches, passed away at her home on January 7, 2010 surrounded by her family. She was born on April 20, 1922 in Hartford, Arkansas the daughter of Charlie Smith and Murtle (Gunn) Smith. She stayed in Hartford until her Senior year in High School at which time her family moved to Stafford, near Houston, where she would meet her husband, Otis Butts, Jr. While in Stafford she helped establish the Stafford Church of Christ, where she was a faithful and active member. During World War II she worked in an airplane factory in New York State as a "Rosie the Riveter". In 1969 she moved to Nacogdoches and came to work at the Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital as an insurance clerk and retired after more than 20 years of service to the hospital. She was very active in her faith at the Swift Church of Christ and as an avid reader she enjoyed her Bible and had read it completely at least three times. Her servants heart also served faithfully at the Nacogdoches Treatment Center. Idle hands not being in her nature, she loved to knit, doing needle point, oil painting and any type of sewing. She would also take old black and white photos and color them by hand. Children were special to her and she enjoyed making angels to be given to them. She is survived by her son: Michael L. Butts of Nacogdoches; her daughter: Betty Kathryn McQuinn and her husband Ronald of Tavares, Florida; brother: Charles Sharon Smith and his wife Jeanette of Fresno, Texas; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by other extended family and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1992 and her son: O.A. (Sonny) Butts, III in 2004. A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at Laird Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow the visitation at 1:00 Pm also at Laird Funeral Home. Graveside interment services will be held on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 1:00 Pm at the Salem Cemetery near Halletsville, Texas. Pallbearers for Mrs. Butts will be: Matt McQuinn, Josh McQuinn, Ronnie Butts, Jonathan Butts, Chuck Smith and Chris Chamberlin. The family of Mrs. Butts is being served by Laird Funeral Home of Nacogdoches.
