Elizabeth Hanson was one of seven Americans killed in a suicide bombing at a C.I.A. base in the remote mountains of Afghanistan. She was 30 years old.

Elizabeth was an Illinois native. She was a 1997 graduate of Keith Country Day School, a private, college prep school in Rockford. Elizabeth was remembered as a bright, engaging, and outgoing high school student who sometimes talked about wanting to go into international relations.

Elizabeth was a 2002 graduate of Colby College in Maine. She was a senior at Colby College at the time of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The terrorist attacks prompted Elizabeth, an economics major, to look at the relationship between religion and economics in her senior year.

Her provocatively titled effort, "Faithless Heathens: Scriptural Economics of Judaism, Christianity and Islam," picked up threads from Christianity's Bible, Judaism's Torah, and Islam's Quran, and looked at the major monotheistic religions' approach toward economics.

Professor Michael Donihue says Hanson had an intellectual curiosity that went beyond the textbook. But he was surprised to learn she was working in Afghanistan.
