Graves unmarked.
THE FAMILY RECORD OF LONA ELROD STATES THAT LUCY EUNICE PITTMAN AND HER
HUSBAND MARSHALL JENKINS WERE BURIED IN UNMARKED GRAVES IN THE MT. CARMEL
CHURCH CEMETERY IN GWINNETT County, GA. THE GRAVES WERE STILL UNMARKED IN
1930. IN FACT, LUCY'S SON WAS NAMED MARSHALL, BUT HER HUSBAND WAS WILLIAM
JENKINS.
IN RECONSTRUCTED GWINNETT County, RECORDS, FROM NOTICES PRINTED IN GA
NEWSPAPERS, AS COMPILED BY LARRY PARR, THE 1837 NEWSPAPER ANNOUncEMENT BY
LUCY E. JENKINS HINTS AT TROUBLE AT HOME: "WILL NOT PAY ANY DEBTS BY
WILLIAM H. JENKINS, WHO I MARRIED IN 1832; LUCY E. JENKINS, JULY 8." THEN
ABOUT THREE WEEKS LATER, "NOTICE: DENIED POSTING LIBEL AGAINST HUSBAND;
LUCY E. JENKINS, JULY 29." ON THE 1850 GWINNETT County, CENSUS, TAKEN BY HER
BROTHER DANIEL N. PITTMAN, LUCY DECLARED HERSELF A WIDOW, AND WILLIAM H.
JENKINS WAS LIVING NEXT DOOR. AT THE TIME A WOMAN COULD BE DECLARED A
WIDOW IF SHE HAD BEEN ABANDONED. ANOTHER PIECE TO THIS STORY MAY BE THE
DECLARATION WRITTEN BY DANIEL TO ACCOMPANY THE 1850 MORTALITY SCHEDULE IN
WHICH HE DISCUSSES NATURAL SPRING WATER, VEGETATION, AND THE "INEBREATING
FLUID WHICH IS SO BOUNTIFULLY MANUFACTURED ON MANY OF THE STREAMS OF THIS
DIVISION,...BUT THE MEN MUST (?) PARTAKE OF THE JUICE MANUFACTURED INTO
ALCOHOL AND ARE HELD CAPTIVE BY THE EVIL ONE AT HIS WILL...THE APPLE IS A
DELICIOUS FRUIT BUT WHEN FERMENTED AND DISTILLED OUGHT NOT TO BE PLACD TO
HIS NEIGHBOR'S MOUTH BY THE BOTTLE WHICH BEGGARS MANY CITIZENS OF ALL
DESCRIPTIONS DISCOVERING THEIR NAKEDNESS TRULY AS SAID THE PROPHET
HABAKKUK CHAPTER 2ND VERSE 15TH." DANIEL PITTMAN HAD A STRONG BAPTIST
UPBRINGING, BUT PERHAPS LUCY'S TROUBLES WITH HER HUSBAND HAD MORE TO DO
WITH HIS STRONG WORDS.
31 MAR 1843, A SHERIFF'S SALE WAS ADVERTISED TO SELL THE LAND OF WILLIAM
JENKINS TO SATISFY A JUDGEMENT FOR JOHN W. CARDWELL. JENKINS WAS ALSO
ENDORSER WITH JAMES TATE AND WM. HOLLAND ON A NOTE OF THOMAS A. PITTMAN,
WHOSE PROPERTY WAS ADVERTISED FOR SALE 13 JULY 1843.
