Thomas Leighton

Birth
England
Death
22 Jan 1672 (aged 67–68)
Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire, USA
Burial
Burial Details Unknown. Specifically: It's not known exactly where Thomas is buried. The monument honors the land he bought after arriving in 1633, his pioneer spirit and the general place where he lived. Though it's not yet proven, it's my belief that this may be a burial ground. Add to Map

Thomas, the immigrant ancestor, arrived in Dover, New Hampshire in 1633.

He married Joanna*. They were the parents of four children: Thomas b ca 1642; Mary b ca 1644; Elizabeth b ca 1646; and Sarah b 1648.

It is not known for certain where Thomas Leighton Sr. is buried. This monument, erected in 1885, is a tribute to Thomas from descendant, Mary Ann Leighton Rollins. Her brother is buried here as well and there are some preliminary suggestions that this may be a burial ground though nothing has yet been done to prove that.

This family is well documented in Perley M. Leighton's book, "A Leighton Genealogy - Descendants of Thomas Leighton of Dover, New Hampshire." (Begin reading about Thomas on page 17.)

The monument is located on Piscataqua Bridge Road which turns into Back River Road and is on private land.**

Raymond and Nancy [Leighton] Auclair, formerly of Kennebunk, Maine are responsible for many hours cleaning and restoring the monument between 2007 and 2009.

* Some research shows that Joanna may have been Job Clement's widow but, at this writing, that is not proven. Her maiden name is also unknown. Anyone bringing reliable documentation on Joanna is welcome.

** PLEASE respect the landowners and request approval before visiting site. Monument is cared for by the landowners [Robert Simpson].
