The widow of the noted Scottish writer Tobias Smollett, Nancy Smollett (nee Anne Lascelles) was a wealthy Jamaican heiress of 26 when she married the adventurous Royal Navy surgeon/ London society physician-turned-author. Said to be an attractive and accomplished "Creole" lady, she traveled England, Scotland, France and Italy with her husband. After his death in Livorno in 1771 at the age of 50, she continued to reside here, comforted by the companionship of their dear friends, the Renners. As close in death as they were in life, the couples are buried next to each other. Mrs. Smollett, who survived her husband by twenty years, died at the age of 70.
