Obituary

Carrie Estelle Bates, 94, of Chattanooga, TN, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 4, 2010. She was born in DeKalb County, AL, on October 18, 1915.


Mrs. Bates, a member of Westview Baptist Church, had worked in a number of local churches in teaching children and adults and in the music ministry. She had copywrited many gospel songs and had written an as yet unpublished book. She was a member of a ladies' prayer band that held services in local jails.


She was a loyal supporter of our service men and women and, along with her sister, sent over 50 thousand newsletters and bulletins to our military forces during the Vietnam War.


She was asked to participate in the Veterans History Project. Her videotaped interview became part of the permanent collection in the Library of Congress.


The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 203 (Chattanooga, TN), recognized her devoted service by presenting her a Certificate of Appreciation. Member of this chapter will be serving as honorary pallbearers.


Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Arthur Virgil Bates; her brother, N.C. Meadows Jr.; her sister, Agnes Meadows Condra; her sons-in-law, Paul Kyle and Bobby Womack; and her granddaughter, Deann Kyle.


Cherishing her memory are her son, Thomas (Betty) Bates; her daughter, Nellie Bates Kyle and Ruby Bates Womack; brother, Marshall Meadows; grandchildren, Dr. Dennis (Donna) Kyle, Belinda (Frank) Simmons, Gary (Alicia) Womack, Vernon (Meg) Womack; great-grandchildren, Sean, Laura and Travis Simmons, Kelli and Kati Kyle, Tiffany (Brian) Thomas and Brandy (David) Patefield; and great-great-grandchildren, Katelyn Elizabeth and Emma Grace Thomas. She also is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.


The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the North Chapel.


Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the North Chapel with Dr. David McNabb and the Rev. Ronnie Smith officiating.


A graveside service will be held Friday, January 8, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.


The family would like to thank all the staff of Soddy-Daisy Health Care Center for their excellent care.
